Floating Floor Introduction

In 1994 Pergo laminate introduced plank style floating floor to North America, having marketed it in Europe ten years earlier. Far from a new product, invented in Sweden in 1977.  The introduction of floating floors brought new concerns. Some floating floors were failing. flooring experts were commissioned to investigate why.

Pergo commissioned The Weinheimer Group (TWG) to perform inspections and onsite testing in Oregon. Today, The Weinheimer Group, offers onsite testing and floor covering inspections throughout Oregon and Washington.  Their services are available to the flooring industry, home and property owners.

Laminate Flooring Core Density

Laminate Flooring Core Density will be either HDF – High Density Fiberboard or MDF – Medium Density Fiberboard. The core layer is the central board upon which the other laminate layers are attached. The fiberboard core is made of highly compacted wood fibers that are bonded with resins. The core board is designed to support the weight and stress put onto the laminate by foot traffic. The higher laminate flooring core density is HDF,which will make a better laminate flooring core. HDF is high density board and has more strength compared to MDF and Particle board. [Read more…]

Laminate Flooring Crawl Space Considerations

Crawl space conditions are an important consideration when installing laminate flooring, engineered or solid wood floor. A crawl spaces must have a proper vapor retarder ground cover spread over the soil. A crawl space must also have proper cross ventilation and no dead air spaces. Without the appropriate vapor barrier and cross ventilation, crawl space moisture will attack the underside of a subfloor and enter into the laminate flooring core. Excessive crawl space moisture may result in cupping, bulging, or swelling of the planks or blistering at the surface of the plank. [Read more…]
